Practical 10 - Closure(Metaphor)

Hello! This is probably my last post for my EIR blog. so sad! :( EIR really has been quite a fun module, and i really have enjoyed the lessons and blog reflections that is needed to be done, but sadly, the sem is ending really soon.

So for this post, i am suppose to write on my favourite metaphor which best describes the most important lesson that i learned throughout the EIR journey.

so, the metaphor that i am going to write on is, a bird. Basically, why i pick a bird as my favourite metaphor, is because a bird starts to learn to fly at the start, which is similar to how i started in this module, having little information and understanding. And as the bird starts to fly as a group, they will help one another throughout their flying journey to the destination. This is similar to my journey in the EIR module. My groupmates and classmates were very helpful in all the class works and group works, and especially our lecturer, who guide us through this module all the way till now.

The bird will start to learn new tricks and skills in flying as time goes by. Similarly, i have learned quite a handful knowledge in this module. And most importantly, i have learned to work better with other people as i was lonely in the class at the start of the semester. Once the bird reaches its destination in its first flight, that's when the module ends, where the knowledge that i got from the experience, could be use for future purposes.

Thank you for reading! (:

Practical 8&9 Part 2

Second Life Dream Holiday

In the second life dream holiday, as you can see from the screen shots that i have done, i visited London, my dream holiday. I was able to visit the London Eye and the Big Ben. It was a wonderful experience as i was able to move around and even take a ride in the London Eye!

Second Life dream holiday is much more better compared to evaluating multimedia websites, as the person would be able to experience it on their own, just like what i had done in Second Life. It is definitely better using Second Life to visit the dream holiday places as it gives the user a better view of the attractions even though it is just virtual.

Practical 8&9

Hello readers! The sem is coming to an end real soon, in 3weeks, and project submission are piling up, including EIR! For this week's work, (1) we are told to go on a "dream holiday", and evaluate the website of the country i've always wanted to go, (2) go on a dream holiday in Second Life and (3) compare both of the experiences.

Firstly, i have decided to go on a "dream holiday" to London, as i feel that London has many great attractions and i have always wanted to visit London every since i was young. I've always wanted to take a photo at London's Big Ben, which is one of the famous attraction in London.

There are four evaluation criteria that can be used to evaluate the website which i found about london, http://www.visitlondon.com/ . The website can be evaluate with Purpose and Coverage.

Purpose

The About Us button would lead the users to the purpose of their website. The purpose is well written, which meets the needs of the users that are planning to go on a holiday.
Coverage

In this website, they offer the 'Accommodation','Places to Go', etc, options for user to find out more information of London's attractions. This is really helpful for users as people who are intending to go to London, would be able to get lots of information about the places they are going to.

Practical 6!

Hey readers! So its already going to be week 12 soon, and so far EIR have been a fun and interesting subject! (:

Okay, now on to the practical questions. We were given three questions, which are:

a.Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?

b.Name ONE database which you will use for your research topic. Why?

c. Name ONE more database which you will use for your course. How will you use this database for your course?

(a) So firstly, i agree that the invisible web is much more effective than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories as some sources are only available in the invisible web. It can be quite useful to a handful of researchers as some of the sources stored in the databases cannot be found on the search engines, and the information in the sources can be hard to find too.

Search engines, meta-search and subject directories are also useful, but not to the extent of how an invisible web can help. If a researcher needs a thorough research on a specific topic or an in depth research, the invisible web would be useful, whereas the search engines and subject directories can only offer sufficient information for a beginner.

(b) One database that i would use is Ebscohost as we were taught to use this database during the lesson last week, and i find it useful after a couple of times trying to search on a particular topic. Ebscohost also covers many different subjects, like business, film, tourism, communication, etc. This database is helpful as it offers a list of different subjects in the database.

(c) Another database that i can use for my course is Factiva. I have also learned on how to use this database in one of my module in my course. It is useful for me as it is easy for me to search on news and business informations in newspapers, trade publications, etc. As my course needs me to do research on business and the markets, Factiva could be a helpful database for me with the information that i can find in it.

So that's it for this week's blog post! Goodbye! (:

Practical 1&2 Reflection

It's aiman here again! Well, there were two e-shopping task that we were supposed to do. The first one was that, we were given $500 to go an online shopping spree. Well of course it wasn't a real one. The second task, was doing e-shopping on second life. I have posted pictures on both task that i have done earlier, so feel free to take a look at my e-shopping experience!

Why do you think there is a need for researchers to know the different purposes of websites?

It is important for researchers to know the different purposes as different websites could give different type of information that the researcher is searching for. For example, if the researcher was to look for a website that offers latest news or information, the researcher would have to know that he/she is finding for a news website, and not advocacy or business or entertainment.

An advocacy website that i found was http://www.greenpeace.org/international/ . Three main differences between this site and www.amazon.com , is that firstly, greenpeace website aims to change peoples mindset into helping save the earth while amazon offers products online. Secondly, greenpeace is set up to give information on the latest update of campaigns and causes, while amazon allows users to browse for products they are looking for. Lastly, amazon allows users to make purchases while greenpeace offers users to get involve with the events.

I have learnt that there are many different types of websites in the internet, and one has to know how to differentiate it in order to do their research effectively.

Thanks for reading! (:

E-Shopping on Second Life

The following pictures are the items that i have purchased from my e-shopping on second life.

The items that i have purchased are, a shirt, black pants and an outer layer shirt. The reason i bought the items is because i think that it suits my character.
The experience of the e-shopping on second life is quite similar to the e-shopping on the internet. Both of the task, i was able to find and purchase the items that i am interested in. The only difference is that, in second life, i was able to purchase and use it on my character while in real life, i'm the one wearing the items.

EIR Practical_1&2 , Activity 3

Hello readers! We were given a task, where we have to imagine ourselves doing our own online shopping and purchase items that i have always wanted to get for myself or my loved ones.

The first item that I've picked was the Olympus Stylus Tough 6020.

This is a 14MP Digital Camera, equip with 5x wide angle zoom and 2.7 inch LCD. I was planning to get this for my dad as he loves to take photos and keep them as memories. Another reason i chose this was that it was green, which is my dad's favourite colour. A simple camera would do, for my dad.
This camera costs $179.95 . It may be costly, but it definitely has great functions for a simple camera.

The next item i wish to get is the Logic3 i-Station RTV Speaker Dock for iPhone and iPod.
This is a useful item for me as I've always wanted to have my very own portable speaker so that i can blast my music whenever i want to. In my opinion, the volume from the iPhone itself is not very loud. It costs $89.99, and i think it is worth the money as i would need it for louder music and it has a stylish design, which i am interested in.

The final product i chose was an Acoustic Guitar.

This is an Washburn Black Knight Series WD5S12B Acoustic Guitar. I was intending to purchase this for my brother as he loves to play the guitar. Although he already owns a guitar, i feel that he needs a new one as the other one has already been used for a few years. A new guitar would definitely make his day. The design and colour of the guitar also suits my brother's style. This guitar costs $199.00 .
